Dreaming of an agricultural based democracy in China. That is Boriz Svartzrnan’s vision after documenting the massive urbanization of China during the years 2006 to 2008. In 1949, 90 percent of China’s population was located in the countryside. In 1992, it was estimated that 40 percent were now living in cities. Modernizing China came at a very heavy price, that of destroying a large part of the nation’s rich cultural and monumental heritage. If the Chinese had been consulted, would the country have a different landscape today?
