The exhibition “Urban Lyricism” at the Point du Jour art center in Cherbourg is presenting a hundred works by American photographer Helen Levitt (1913-2009). Born in New York, Levitt remained attached to this city she practically never left that would become the subject of her photographs. From her beginnings in the early 1930’s to her last pictures, she relentlessly photographed the people of Brooklyn, Harlem, and the Lower East Side. John Szarkowski, in Looking at Photographs, Museum of Modern Art, New York, (1973), wrote about her:
“What is remarkable in her pictures, are these mundane routine daily activities, done anywhere at any time, that are full of grace, drama, humor, compassion and surprise. They are filled with the makings of art, as if the street were the stage, the residents the actors and actresses, mimes, speakers and dancers.”
