The Argus Fotokunst gallery presents through May 28th the exhibition Country Road, from the photographer Clemens Kalischer. The series, a result of the artists’ trips to Virginia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia around the 1950’s, allows one to follow a personal cartography of the region of the Appalachians and their inhabitants. Fascinated by the South of the United States, his pictures visit homes, open air scenes or work spaces, all focusing on their actors, the central subject in almost all of the photographs. The selection of 43 pictures humbly transmits the everyday life of this rural world portraying its bitter and simple essence.
Clemens Kalischer was born in 1921 in Lindau (Germany). His family tried to escape the Nazi dangers by emigrating to France, where despite it all he remained prisoner for three years before being able to leave Europe for the United States. Kalischer established himself in this country, where he would go on to study art and photography. His first collaboration with France Presse would be followed by projects for the New York Times, Time Magazine, Life and Newsweek. His first solo show in Germany did not take place until 1998, the year in which Argus Fotokunst, Norbert Bunge’s gallery would display his work for the first time in Berlin. Kalischer celebrated his 90th birthday on March 30th. He continues to take photographs.
Parallely to this Berlin based exhibition, the former concentration camp Mittelbau-Dora in Nordhausen will present from April 12 Kalischer’s series Displaced Persons, also with the collaboration of Mr. Bunge.
