The Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin is showing until May 15th the exhibition Alice Springs, the name under which June Newton developed her vast photographic work. With over 250 pictures, this retrospective explores different aspects in the work June, from fashion and advertising photographs to portraits and nudes. The exhibition offers the visitor a vision as a whole of this artist for the fist time, frequently present in the numerous exhibitions in June’s Room at this Berlin museum.

The visit begins with the pictures taken for the hairdresser Jean Louis David, Gitanes cigarettes, the magazine Dépêche Mode, all published in the 1970s (her first Elle cover was published in 1974). We continue to find the detailed portrait collection that Springs began in the middle of the decade. The artist photographed people from the art world, cinema and music not only for newspapers and magazines, but also privately in Paris, Miami, Los Angeles, Rome, Antibes or Monte Carlo, the same names that have defined the cultural horizon for the last forty years.

The photographs regarding Helmut Newton, featured in June’s Room, suggest an intimate approach of the photographer, showing the way in which he worked. Other color works, rare, reveal compositions with nudes and help complete this comprehensive retrospective. Taschen editions have also published a beautiful trilingual volume (German, English and French) that gathers the work of Newton/Springs. Upon it’s completion in Berlin, the exhibition will be shown in Hanover.
