Images of sailboats
Michael Kahn has shot more than a thousand film photographs of sailboats, which puts him several miles ahead of his contemporaries. Through his images of the boat “American Beauty” or that of a classic yacht in full sail, this photographer is worthy of his connection with Ansel Adams and Gustave Le Gray who photographed, in their own time, the most beautiful images of sailboats.
The sails are like abstract paintings. The prow of the “Windward” pushes through the heave as the “Connie,” anchored, waits for the sea mist to rise. At times we think we see the silhouette of the captain, the crew, but the main characters of this photographic “Armada” remain the sailboats. Proud and stretching off the coast of Saint-Tropez, bending in pain in the midst of a storm, they assert themselves as the living.
