At Christie’s in London earlier this week was the spring photography auction. Out of the 90 lots, 63 sold for 141% by estimate.
Philippe Garner, International Head of Photographs and Alexander Montague-Sparey, Head of Sale commented: “A great result for a very high quality sale, with really strong competition for prime works from all eras of photography. The top price was for a photo-collage by Peter Beard that set a new world record for the artist at auction. The £103,250 paid for a work from 2004 by Désirée Dolron, the £61,250 paid for the modernist composition by Paul Outerbridge, from 1924, and the £55,250 for Julia Margaret Cameron’s haunting allegorical portrait Cassiopeia, from 1866 – which was the 4th top lot of the sale – collectively underscored the breadth of the selection offered today and the depth of collector interest.”
