The Hiltawsky gallery in Berlin is displaying until May 21st more than 30 works belonging to the portfolio of the former assistant of Helmut Newton, Just Loomis (*1957, Nevada). The photographs, color and black and white, feature strip-teasers, older folks (the artist’s mother among others), waitresses and homeless, next to numerous children and teenagers. Children that stare into the camera, or gaze elsewhere as they play, hypnotized by a turning billiard ball or disguised as musketeers or Spider-man.

These photos, which could be included into the socio-documentary category, are also accompanied by images of the Norwegian band A-ha, taken by Loomis in the 80’s, some of them never published until now. A consequence of a meeting between the photographer and Morten Harket is the “Hunting High and Low” album cover that earned Loomis a nomination at the Grammy’s. He would subsequently also produce the covers for “Stay on these Roads”, “East of the Sun” and “Memorial Beach”.

On the occasion of the exhibition, the editor Hatje Cantz also published the bilingual English-German book “As we are” (120 pages, 85 color images, €39,80).
