The Weekly World Tour

Serbia. ”On Sunday night, thousands of youths gathered in Belgrade to protest the extradition of accused Serbian war criminal Ratko Mladic to The Hague. Mladic, indicted in 1995 by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia after Serbian forces under his command executed some 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys in the town of Srebrenica, was arrested on May 26 after spending 16 years as a fugitive.” Photo by Andrew Testa, New York Times

Somalia. ”Clashes continued this week between Somali soldiers supported by the African Union and Islamist fighters—though “clash” seems too weak a word, in light of this image of a Somali soldier standing over the body of a man believed to be one of the Islamists.” Photo by Mustafa Abdi/AFP, ”Lens”, New York Times

Missouri, Part 1. ”In the week after a killer tornado hit Joplin, Missouri, residents began picking up the pieces of their former lives.” Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images, ”Big Picture”, Boston Globe

The Presidency, Part 1. ”During his recent trip to Europe, President Barack Obama took on the role of Glambassador-in-Chief. After visiting Ireland he was off to London, where he and First Lady Michelle Obama slept in Buckingham Palace and met Britain’s Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, and his new wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.” Photo by Charles Dharapak/AFP/Getty Images, People Weekly

The Presidency, Part 2. ”Obama also fulfilled his role Chief Executive, attending a G8 Summit in France then concluding a four-nation European trip with visit to Poland. This photo, which shows Obama at Paris’s Orly airport on May 27, captures the purposeful sense of the president’s movement.” Photo by Jewel Samad/AFP Getty Images, ”Big Picture”, Boston Globe

The Presidency, Part 4. ”On May 30, the president was performing his duty as the Commander-in-Chief, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. Meanwhile, Sarah Palin, who may be inching closer to declaring herself a candidate for president, launched an East Coast bus tour at the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally in Washington, D.C. ’I love that smell of emissions,’ she told FOX News.” Photo by Damon Winter, New York Times

Faces, Part 2. ”Sarah Ferguson, formerly Duchess of York when she was married to Briton’s Prince Andrew, was not invited to the recent royal wedding, but she looks like the quintessential queen in this portrait, as she should: Fergie will soon debut her own television show, called Finding Sarah, on the Oprah Winfrey Network.” Photo by Danielle Levitt, Harper’s Bazaar

Namibia. ”This astonishing photograph is indeed a photograph. Frans Lanting shot it at the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the painterly effect coming from lighting conditions at dawn. Lanting explained: ’The warm light of the morning sun was illuminating a huge red sand dune dotted with white grasses while the white floor of the clay pan was still in shade. It looks blue because it reflects the color of the sky above.’ ” Photo by Frans Lanting, National Geographic

Florida. ”Another beautiful light show: The Space Shuttle Endeavor lands at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida on June 1, concluding its final mission.” Photo from AP, Washington Post

Maryland. ”Freshmen ’Plebes’ at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis form a human wall in order to ascend Herndon Monument, which is covered with lard for the occasion. On top of the monument is a Plebian Sailor’s hat, which, according to tradition, the freshman must replace with their future headgear, a Navy officer’s hat. You’re right, this does look like a Bruce Weber fashion image.” Photo by Mark Wilson/Getty Images, ”Framework”, Los Angeles Times

Cover Story. ”Fast Company illustrated its cover story about the 100 most creative people in business by having late-night talk-show host Conan O’Brien portray seven of history’s most creative people. Including Madonna.” Photo by Matthias Clamer, Fast Company

David Schonauer begins his review with a photograph by Andrew Testa taken in Belgrade. The people of the city came together in protest against the extradition of Ratko Mladic, arrested this past May 26th after 16 years of exile.
This week President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama continued their European tour. After Ireland, here he is in Buckingham Palace with Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Back in the United States, in Missouri he is portrayed embracing a family in front of the rubble left by the tornado in Joplin.
The second part of David Schonauer’s Press review is lighter. Celebrities, amazing photographers and a bit of edgy humor.
For Harper’s Bazaar, Danielle Levitt has photographed Sarah Ferguson getting ready to begin a new TV show: Finding Sarah.
The light and the weather conditions in Namibia have allowed Frans Lanting to shoot some remarkable photography, notable for its pictorial effects (National Geographic).
Finally, the last image is the cover of Fast Company magazine, shot by Matthias Clamer : Conan O’Brien wearing the clothes of seven of the most remarkable people in the history of the world…Madonna has her place, right next to Einstein!”
