A photography collection of nudes up will be put up for auction by the Société de Ventes Volontaires Yann le Mouel, and under the expertise of Madame Viviane Esders, Expert of the Appeals Court of Paris, on Tuesday, June 28 at 2pm in room 16 of the Hôtel Drouot.

This sale will inaugurate a new semi-annual theme-based series. In this case, the series being presented is the story of the nude photographed and, through the nude, a story of photography. Nude photography has existed ever since the invention of photography. In the sale are daguerreotypes and very early stereoscopic and colored views that can be considered “flighty”, playing with erotic fantasies. The more serious prints include Bellocq, Braun or Lehnert & Landrock. In the early 20th century, nude photography mirrored major photographic trends, playing with light and shadow, and later manipulations (double exposures or solarisations).

The sale catalog is not chronological, rather it emphasizes themes, blending early photography with 20th century works: Bellmer, Boubat, Boucher, Bovis, Brandt, Colomb, Doisneau, Feher, Hausmann, Horst, Krull, Man Ray, René-Jacques, Ronis, Rudomine, Schall, Sougez, Tabard, Zuber.

As for contemporary photographers, they can be grouped together by determining how they reinterpret “The imaginary world of nudes”. Shown by: Nobuyoshi Araki, Ruth Bernhard, Guy Bourdin, Harry Callahan, Lucien Clergue, Judy Dater, André de Dienes, Henri Foucault, Ralph Gibson, René Groebli, David Hamilton, Sam Haskins, Frank Horvat, Irina Ionesco, Jean-François Jonvelle, Les Krims, Peter Lindbergh, Nicholas Nixon, George Platt-Lynes, Jan Saudek, Jeanloup Sieff, Bert Stern, Christer Stromholm, Arthur Tress, Joel Peter Witkin, Kimiko Yoshida…

In addition to the feminine nude, a non-negligeable part of the catalog is devoted to the masculine nude with pictures by: Bruce of Los Angeles, Gloeden, Robert Mapplethorpe, Marconi, Pierre Molinier, Pluschow, Steiner…
