On the occasion of the Rencontres Photographiques d'Arles, the Cinematheque of Tanger is organizing a photography auction on Friday, July 8th at 6:30pm. In total, approximately 40 photographers will come together to support this association that is struggling to develop cinematographic culture in Morocco. The fruit of this auction will allow the Cinematheque of Tanger to continue their program for the 2011-2012 season.
The Cinémathèque de Tanger began in 2005, when a group of artists and film professionals formed a nonprofit association to save the 1938 Cinema Rif, on the main plaza of Tangier, Morocco. Today the Cinematheque is North Africa’s foremost cinema cultural center. Beyond presenting some 1000 films contemporary and classic films, from more than 30 countries, the Cinémathèque de Tanger workshops and master classes attract local audiences, including children, women’s groups, student filmmakers, and non-profits. The film archive, built around documentaries and artist videos, is another dimension of the Cinémathèque de Tanger’s mission: to bring the people of Tangier back to the movies.
