FotoRio is the name of the International Photography Fair of Rio de Janeiro. In 2011, during the fifth edition, Festival Curator and Founder Milton Guran presented 150 exhibitions in 60 locations throughout the city. From them, the MEP has selected the works of three photographers: Fernanda Magalhaes, Rogério Reis et Edu Simoes.

Fernanda Magalhães , Photographic Representations of Portly Nude Women (1995)

This series is comprised of 28 pictures taken in 1995. “Self portraits, and pictures of other bodies taken by the photographer to evoke sexuality, food, appearance, maternity, and other taboos that influence a heavy woman’s identity in a socially invisible body”.

Edu Simões, Gastronomy for hard day’s work (2004)

“In 2004, I visited several buildings under construction in Sao Paulo and I asked the workers to show me their lunchboxes. Even if it was lunchtime and most of them were starving, they let me take the pictures.”

Rogério Reis, Nobody Belongs to Anybody (2010)

In Brazil, freedom begins for some where it is left off for others. Rogério Reis treats this question of belongin with humor and sensuality, covering couples’ faces on Rio beaches with colored bands.
