The Sprengel Museum in Hannover is a pioneer photography museum, one of the most important to have opened since the 1970s. From now until January 15, 2012, it will present a selection of images from the excellent Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung collection.
Dedicated to exploring the currents of documentary photography from the past few decades, the collection contains works from such great American and European photographers as Bernd and Hilla Becher, William Eggleston, Lee Friedlander, Diane Arbus, Martin Parr and Robert Adams. The collection also includes work from later generations: Rineke Dijkstra, Thomas Struth, and Boris Mikhaïlov, to Tobias Zielony, Jitka Hanzlová, Stephen Gill and Jochen Lempert. A total of 31 artists will be on display.
Photography Calling offers a sweeping vision of the history of documentary photography and the evolution of its diverse styles and methods. The exhibit is arranged thematically, with each room presenting two different takes on a single subject, from the perception and presentation of reality (Thomas Demand and Peter Feldmann), to the depiction of poverty (Nicolas Nixon in the 1980s and Tobias Zielony today), to the means we use to speak about “the real” (Stephen Gill and Paul Graham).
As part of the exhibit, three artists will present projects on the methods of collecting and the usage of photography: Thierry Geoffroy from 10/09/11 to 10/30/11, Markus Schaden from 01/11/11 to 12/06/11, and Wilhelm Schürmann from 12/06/11 to 01/15/12.
