Grace NDIRITU (Kenyane), Natural disaster (Urban Myth / Urban Legends), vidéo, 2007
This work continues the lineage of making environmental videos, started in the 1980s by the films Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi by Godfrey Reggio. They were inspired by the Hopi words given to the titles, meaning “Life out of Balance” and “Life in Transformation”. The Native American relationship to nature is one of omnipresence and does not distinguish in terms of status and power between human beings and the natural world. By contrast the Westernised ideology of conquest and exploitation has produced a ‘model’ of nature, a simulated media reality showing one ‘natural’ disaster after another without a larger (spiritual) context.
