Under the direction of Stéphanie Pons, the Néret-Minet & Tessier auction house will offer photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries. The auction, comprised of 167 different lots of an estimated value between 30 and 10,000€, will be held on Thursday, November 10, at 14h, in Salle 2 of Drouout Richelieu.
Notable among the items up for auction will be the archives of Frédéric Scheibe, fashion photographer for the magazine, Jours de France, and a rare collection of photographs from the Caucuses and Central Asia.
From the 19th century:
Gustave Le Gray’s La Joconde, printed on albumin paper, c. 1855. Lot 35, estimated value: 10,000 - 12,000€. Three similar prints are conserved in a public collection in France.
The restoration of the Vendôme Column, by Charles-François Bossu, aka Marville, c. 1873, Lot 40, estimated value 5,000 - 6,000€.
A collection of around 106 photographs from the Caucuses and Central Asia (c. 1885 - 1890), by the Georgian photographers, Dmitri Ermakov and Alexander K. Engel, and a few unidentified photographs, 31 lots, estimated values from 80 - 300€.
From the 20th century:
Lot 109, Robert Doisneau’s “Créatures de rêve” (1952, print from 1955), estimated value: 6,000 - 8,000€
4 prints from the Brassaï estate, including a 1950 portrait of René Clair. Lot 106, estimated value: 4000 - 4500€
Lot 114 contains items from the unreleased archives of Frédéric Scheibe, fashion photographer for the magazine Jours de France from 1965 to 1984. It includes more than 8000 ektachromes (9 x 12cm), 181 work notebooks documenting the photo shoots, and 50 magazines. The lot is estimated between 10,000 and 15,000€.
The auction also pays tribute to the late Turkish photojournalist, Göksin Sipahioglu, with five large-format photographs dating from 1965 to 1970 in Maoist China. Estimated value: 10,000 - 15,000€.
Finally, a series of Polaroid diptychs by Araki. Lot 163, estimated value 3000 - 3500€, and two Selenium prints by Alberto Garcia-Alix, Lots 166 and 167, each estimated between 2500 - 3000€.
