Sotheby’s, which has made Paris its European capital for photography sales, holds two auctions per year, once in May and once in November as part of Paris Photo.
This year, the auction will take place at Sotheby’s Parisian headquarters, 76 rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, November 11 at 14h30.
The auction will open with a rare “whole plate” daguerreotype by Vincent Chevalier, “Vue de Paris: la Seine, le Louvre et la statue d’Henri IV” 1840-1841. The picture was taken from the window of the photographer’s studio on the Pont Neuf in Paris. On the back, a label from the famous optician’s atelier.

Also up for auction is a version of Gustave le Gray’s “La Grande Vague” (1857), from a private collection in Paris. Lot 6, estimated value 60,000 - 80,000€
A collection of 7 photographs by Eugène Atget, each estimated between 10,000 and 15,000€, and a collection of photographs by Jacques Henri Lartigue, lots 38 - 43, whose estimated value is between 10,000 and 15,000€ each
Lot 47 is a 1927 self-portrait of Claude Cahun, a silver print from the era (119 x 90mm), estimated value 35,000 - 50,000€
Lot 50, A dozen vintage prints by Willy Otto Zielke, one of the pioneers of the Nouvelle Vision, including one of the “Glasverzerrung” from 1929. From the same year, a “nude study” by Frantisek Drtikol, lot 45, estimated value 25,000 - 35,000€.
“Olympia”, a rare portfolio by Leni Riefenstahl prepared during her famous documentary on the Berlin Olympic games of 1936. Lot 60, estimated value 100,000 - 150,000€
Also in the “vintage” category is “Sunset” by Otto Steinert (1946). Lot 88, estimated value 14,000 - 18,000€.
“Electricité” a portfolio of ten photogravures by Man Ray from 1931. Lot 64, estimated value 18,000 - 23,000€
A collection of Sudek prints, including a color print, “Untitled” (Still life study) from 1952. Lot 74, estimated value 20,000 - 25,000€.
Collections by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Irving Penn, plus a group of Robert Mapplethorpe photographs, including “Orchid” and “Poppy” from 1988. Lots 115 and 117, estimated value 18,000 - 23,000€.
