After the previous day’s auction of the first hundred lots of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s work, Christie’s presents a group of lots of various origins and two series from private collections. Lots 101 and 113, both part a French collection, include prints by Peter Beard, enhanced polaroids and silver prints that include “Loliado’’ from “The end of the game” 1968, made in 1997, est. 50,000 - 70,000 €.
Lots 135 to 151 come from a Belgian private collection and comprise many prints by Lee Friedlander, including a few of his famous self-portraits of the 1960s (lots 135 to 138 est. 8,000 - 10,000€). It also contains a series of nudes, among them Madonna’s nudes, lot 141 titled “Nude Madonna” from 1979, est. between 15,000 and 25,000€. It includes the famous 1973 portfolio, limited to 75 copies, lot 145: 15 prints signed and numbered, between 60,000 and 80,000 €. In addition to the Friedlanders, a lot of six prints by Eugène Atget.
“Longpont, Eglise”, 1902, shows how the photographer would train his lens on a specific subject. The lot is estimated between 10,000 and 15,000 €.
Apart from the private collections, there are several notable still lifes and famous photographs by Irving Penn (lot 134, “Mouth”, 1986, a dye transfer from 1992, est. 80,000 to 120,000 €.) Other famous prints by Richard Avedon, such as lot 118 “Dovina with Elephants”, “Evening Dress by Dior”, “Cirque d’Hiver”, Paris, 1955: 25,000 - 35,000 €. And lastly his portrait of Brigitte Bardot from 1959, lot 163, est. to 70,000 - 90,000 €.
A large format print (120 x 320 cm) by François-Marie Bannier: lot 119, “La chambre de Picasso à Vauvenargues”, enhanced silver print with writing, estimated to 40,000 - 60,000 €.
Following that, photographs by Daido Moriyama, Herb Ritts, Helmutt Newton, Erwin Olaf, and Lise Sarfati’s “Gina #12, Oakland 2009”, lot 168, 10,000 - 15,000 €.
There is also Roni Horn’s “Clown Mirror #3”, 2001, lot 177: two chromogenic prints, 15,000 - 20,000 €.
