Photo Celebrates Mario Testino
The French magazine Photo devoted its latest issue to Mario Testino, a world of fashion photography . This special edition is the most recent in a long line of tributes and monographs dedicated to the likes of Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier Bresson, Edouard Boubat, Helmut Newton, David LaChapelle and Willy Ronis. This month, Photo celebrates the Peruvian photographer’s thirty-year career by inviting him to serve at its editor-and-chief and devoting the entire issue to his work.
The team at Photospoke with some of Testino’s closest friends and collaborators, scouring 30 years of photography to extract the quintessence of his work, offering readers a unique perspective on his work.
The issue features a long interview illustrated by never-before-seen photographs from Testino’s personal collection, different chapters retracing his career (fashion photography, the male nude, the female nude, celebrities), and a more intimate spread entitled Jardin secret.
We hear not only from Testino, but from his friends and collaborators as well: from editors-in-chief of magazines, fashion designers, actors and gallery owners, and photographers like Patrick Demarchelier, Gilles Bensimon and Jean-Paul Goude.
Agnès Grégiore, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, explains that, “this type of issue is always exciting. It’s the opportunity to get to know someone through their work and their circle. The long interview gives our subject the chance to speak. Of the 488 issues of the magazine, only 15 are entirely devoted to a photographer, and these issues always become cult objects.”
