On Thursday, May 10, 2012, an exhibit of Black and White and color photographs by Evelyn Hofer opened at the James Danziger Gallery in Chelsea. In the 1970’s, Hilton Kramer, the art critic for the NYTimes, called her “the most famous unknown photographer in America.” Hofer was born in Germany in 1922 and died in 2009 in Mexico City. She began studying photography in Switzerland in the 1930’s at a young age. Her career as a professional photographer started in Mexico in 1942, where her family moved to escape fascism, but really took off when she moved to New York City in 1946 and started studying with Alexey Brodovitch. She worked with a 4x5 view camera and yet there is wonderful sense of liveliness to her pictures, even a series of still lifes done in 1996-97, give you the sense that you are sitting in front of them and could reach out and grab a grape or two. The photos are from the Estate and if I could find the funds in my budget there are several that I would love to own.
