In Tactics, published as poster and a book (50p, 20 copies), Christopher Gianunzio explores the notion of education.
By isolating black-and-white images from a “training video” produced during the Cold War and arranging them—as a mosaic for the poster version and as an exercise book for the book—he makes the extracts from an operational program seem abstract and mysterious. It reminds one of spy films from the era, but also of Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove in its comic but unsettling absurdity.
Training, equipment, confrontation: a dynamic that Christopher Gianunzio’s project, straddling cinema, photography and publishing, expertly examines. Superficial at first glance, it offers itself (especially in poster form) as a moving mental puzzle, which runs counter to perfection idealized in the video, calling into question its robotic character.
