Arles 2012: Magnum, Clément Saccomani
Is Magnum still relevant? That’s the question the agency plans to answer during a roundtable discussion from 16h30 to 18h. At the invitation of François Hébel, the roundtable will follow up on questions raised during the legendary agency’s annual meeting, which saw the induction of three new photographers: Bieke Depoorter (26); Jérôme Sessini (43) and Zoé Strauss (42).
As usual, the annual meeting was a highlight, featuring several memorable exchanges. While the publishing industry continues its collapse, the agency is preparing for a transformation. Major changes were announced yesterday. “With the rise of digital technology, Magnum remains relevant,” says Clément Saccomani, the agency’s editorial director. “The photographers have many questions. They’re at the heart of the complex issues of copyright, the availability of photography archives, and alternative modes of production. However, I find that photography has never been so alive at Magnum. We’re living in a very innovative and promising time. We plan to address several challenges, including the monetization of online traffic. The old way of doing things no longer applies. Before, the press started out by looking at its readers. Today the trend has been reversed: one starts with the content and refines it according to the target audience.”
