Bachar el-Assad’s régime has been merciless in its dealings with anyone daring to demonstrate or be part of the uprising, relentlessly pursuing opponents, even inside civilian hospitals. People found injured are arrested and taken to military hospitals where many are tortured to death. A great deal of courage is needed to save and care for the wounded, any such assistance being considered an act of high treason. There with the opponents to the regime are health care workers who realize they are targets for loyalist forces; so a parallel system of health care centers has been set up, secret centers with only basic facilities, where the wounded often die for want of proper medical care.
