Sotheby's : 65 nus pour la fondation Magnum
The next photography sale at Sotheby’s will be held during Paris Photo, on November 16, 2012, at 16h30.
One of the sale’s highlights is Lot No. 59, a portfolio of 65 nude photographs gathered for Magnum’s 60th anniversary by 65 Magnum photographers: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Werner Bischof, Josef Koudelka, Inge Morath, Steve McCurry, Martine Franck, Raymond Depardon, Abbas, Martin Parr, Patrick Zachmann, Marc Riboud, Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Erich Hartmann, Bruce Davidson and Paolo Pellegrin (Est. 100,000 - 200,000€). The portfolio will be the basis of a foundation. According to Abbas, president of the Magnum endowment fund, the foundation’s aim will be: the conservation of archives left by photographer’s at their deaths; the protection of their copyright; the promotion of their work through books and exhibitions; and keeping the collection available to historians and researchers. This trust consist of more than 1,250 prints and 500 books by Magnum photographers.
The sale will begin with a full-plate daguerreotype, entitled “Pierrefonds,” dating from the 1840s (est. 30,000 – 40,000€).
The following lots are representative of modernism from the 1920s and 30s, with a set of vintage portraits, including August Sander’s "Der erdgebundene Mensch" (1912, est. 30,000 – 50,000€), and a portrait of Gustav Klimt with his cat, by Moritz Nähr (est. 15,000 – 20,000€).
An untitled and never-before-seen Man Ray print c. 1935-37 shows a mold of Venus de Medici on a mannequin (est. 20,000 – 30,000€). Then we find two vintage Diane Arbus, “Woman with a briefcase and pocketbook" (est. 40,000 – 50,000€) and “Waitress, nudist camp N.J. 1963” (est. 30,000 – 40,000€).
From Karl Blossfeld, “Papaver oriantalis,” a vintage print (est. 45,000 – 65,000€), and from André Kertesz, an untitled photograph of Paris c. 1928-29 (est. 80,000 – 120,000€).
Also for sale are a fashion photographs by Horst P. Horst (est. 18,000 – 23,000€), five photographs from Helmut Newton’s series “Big Nudes” (est. 12,000 - 15,000€ each), Irving Penn’s “Mannequins reclining, 1977” (est. 12,000 - 18,000€) and “Girl Drinking” (1949), as well as twelve prints of “Hands of Miles Davis” (1986, est. 25,000 - 35,000€ each).
Other items include a large-format portrait of Keith Richards by Peter Lindbergh from 1999 (est. 40,000 - 60,000€), and a platinum-palladium Robert Mapplethorpe print entitled “Flower” (1985, est. 20,000 - 25,000€).
More contemporary lots: Leni Riefenstahl’s “Nuba” portfolio (est. 45,000 - 65,000€), a large-format Massimo Vitali print (est. 15,000 - 20,000€), and two Ilfochrome prints by Guido Mocafico (est. 7,000 - 9,000 each).
