Cédric Gerbehaye, lauréat du Prix Roger Pic 2012

South Sudan, 11 August 2010 Cattle camp of Bir-Diak of the Pakam clan of the Dinka tribe, Rumbek North country, Lakes State. During the war the cattle keepers were forced to carry the weapons and ammunition for the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). The humiliation remains and that is why fights still erupt between them. Since the peace agreement of 2005, it has been easy to obtain weapons left over from Sudan’s civil war. © Cedric Gerbehaye / Agence VU

Monia is my sister. She is disabled since birth. My mother takes care of her every day, every hour, always. Monia's world is a world away from everything else, solitary, confined, but not empty, where time is made up of moments, a present that does not need to project into the future. © Giovanni Cocco

The Jury of the Prix Scam Roger Pic 2012, presided by Jean-Marie Drot, was composed of Jean-Noël Jeanneney, Thierry Ledoux, Marc Le Mené and Clément Saccomani, who awarded the prize to Cédric Gerbehaye for his series The Land of Cush, taken in South Sudan.
The photographers Lucile Chombart de Lauwe (Le bar Floréal) and Giovanni Cocco received honorable mentions for their works Foyers (urbains) mongols and Monia, respectively.
The 4,500€ prize is awarded to the work of one artist. A member of the Agence VU’, Cédric Gerbehaye, a journalist by training, began taking pictures in 2002 while covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In 2007, his report on Gaza was awarded the Prix Bayeux-Calvados for war correspondents. Since 2010, he has covered South Sudan, which became the 54th African country in 2011. Land of Cush bears witness to the birth of a new nation.
The work of all three artists will be on view at Scam until February 28, 2013.
