Rio de Janeiro : Fabrizia Granatieri - Devoção
Oi Futuro in Rio de Janeiro will present through December 16 a series by Fabrizia Granatieri, Devoção, A corrente de Santa Sara Kali. The exhibition brings together forty works dealing with the ritual devoted to Saint Sarah, or “Sara-la-Kali” (Sara the black), a ceremony the photographer attended regularly in 2006 and 2007.
Every month, the Brazilian Gypsy communities come together in the Arpoador residential neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro (between Ipanema and Copacabana) for this gathering of faith, which involves magic, ritual worship of fire, and other rites of purification. Sara-la-Kali, the patron saint of this nomadic people, protects those faithful to her.
A photographer for nearly twenty years, the carioca Fabrizia Granatieri has worked regularly for the famous newspaper Folha de São Paulo and contributed to a number of magazines. Her first solo show, Sua rua, Minha vida (Your Street, My Life), was exhibited at the Museum of the Republic in 2003, in partnership with Doctors Without Borders. She has since exhibited regularly, including in the Rio de Janeiro subway since 2006 (a permanent exhibition of her work is on display at the São Cristovão e Botafogo stations), and at the Sesc Niterói.
The exhibition marks the 49th edition of the project “Expofoto,” which occupies the 8th floor of the Oi Futuro de Flamengo. Founded in 2003, the program has previously presented the works of Walter Firmo, Wilton Montenegro and Aguinaldo Ramos.
