La Fenêtre is a new arts space in the heart of Montpellier that specializes in architecture and design. Their current exhibition focuses on an unknown aspect of the work of the French photographer Bernard Plossu: his films, the still pictures taken from his films, and his commissioned shots of architecture.
8 / Super 8 features three of his films, 67 stills and a book. The films are: Michèle (1962-63), a 7-minute black-and-white documentary; On the road (1966), a 30-minute black-and-white documentary; and Le voyage Mexicain (1965-66) a 30-minute black-and-white documentary with a soundtrack by Joaquim Plossu. In his introduction to the exhibition, Christophe Berthoud describes the work as, “A raw, amateurish vision of Mexico in 8mm... Vitaly at 18 frames per second that reproduces in real time the way that young Plossu saw the world.” The 67 stills pictures taken from his films that accompany the program can also be found in the book. They give the films a new life, one that will be rediscovered with every new viewing.
The architectural photographs were taken by the architect Rudy Ricciotti of his own work. They come from the Suzette Ricciotti collection, which also holds Impair et passe, seventeen 180x240mm photographs taken by Plossu in Provence, accompanied by 17 poetic descriptions. A series of 180x240mm steel-mounted prints from the Villa Noailles-Hyères collection completes the exhibition.
