The artist Jesse A. Fernández was born in Havana in 1925 and died in Paris in 1986. Like many photographers of the time—Gotthard Schuh comes to mind—Fernández was interested in painting, visual arts and literature. In a retrospective on view as the Maison de l’Amérique Latine through February 28, 2013, the curators Juan Manuel Bonnet and Gabriel Bauret have decided to show the many different sides of his oeuvre. But his photography remains front and center. The exhibition is arranged chronologically and geographically. It takes us from Cuba to France via the United States, with stops in South America, the Caribbean, Spain, Havana, New York, Madrid and Paris. The artists and writers Fernández met along the way enjoy pride of place.
