Born in 1935, Jean-Claude Sauer was a photographer for Paris-Match for 40 years and was above all a photo journalist. He has covered numerous conflicts, from Algeria to Afghanistan, Biafra to Iraq, not forgetting Vietnam where he spent several months during 1965 and 1966. Many of his photographs have been published in Life. Suffering, death and despair have been part of his everyday work. Between conflicts he attended Yves-Saint Laurent fashion shows or photographed Brigitte Bardot naked for the first time. This was a particular passion in his life, for fashion and people were his sanctuary away from war-torn countries. His honesty, sincerity, and humor show through in his portraits. Most of the celebrities he has met, the King of Spain, Pompidou, Giscard d’Estaing, Chirac, Regan, Ingrid Bergman, Romy Schneider, César, Ungaro… have remained his friends.
