André Mérian has roots in the south of France, but in recent years he has been attracted northward. After exploring the Netherlands, he traveled through Brittany, interrogating the land the way the American “New Topographic” photographers did two or three decades ago.

Over the course of several trips, he explored the frontiers of cities, the countryside, and the seas where man is absent or invisible. This is not the countryside of Thibault Cuisset, nor the France of Raymond Depardon, nor the many reports on suburban lifestyle, like Bill Owens “suburbia.” This is not a picturesque postcard.
