Vincent Toulotte approaches photography like an experiment, conducting research to arrive at a mode of operation, an aesthetic sense. This procedure is not limited to its aesthetic outcome, which would in itself be too poor and fail to interest the public. He developed a pictorial sense in his photographs through singularity, the culmination of a unique body of work inspired by the world of painting.
Toulotte could be described as post-pictorialist because his spearhead is the hand of man, artisanal work, manual production as opposed to automatic, mechanical production. The unique silver nitrate print, which he finds wanting, pushes him to do more visual research in order to arrive at a combination of beauty and intelligence in his work. He strives to combine several media to arrive at a unique result, so that the black-and-white frame might suddenly become a child, the creation of a body instead of a brain.
