A retrospective of the reportage work of Gilles Caron will be on display at the the Musée de l’Élysée in Lausanne until May 12, 2013. Presented in cooperation with the Fondation Gilles Caron, the exhibition curators are Michel Poivert and Jean-Christophe Blaser.

Through the 150 prints and documents selected from the archives of the Fondation Gilles Caron and a few private collections, we witness the major historical events covered by Caron, from the Six-Day War, May 1968 and Biafra to his disappearance in Cambodia.

Poivert spent three years in the archives, poring over not only the photographs, but also the letters, publications and interviews. Not surprisingly, then, some of the images have never been seen. But Poivert discovered something more essential: underneath the photographs lies a deeper reflection on the profession and role of photojournalism. We see the transformation, over the course of the 1960s, from Caron conceiving of his work as simply news to a vital means of informing the public. This realization provides the undercurrent of the whole exhibition.
