On a recent trip to Tokyo, Japan for an opening of her “Mothers & Daughters” show at TokyoArtsGallery in Shibuya-ku, Julia Fullerton-Batten spent all her free time shooting. On a small budget, with a local producer and assistant, she walked around the metropolis, searching for images that struck her. She approached people in the street, within minutes lights were set up. The photos highlight an isolation that is often associated with notions of Tokyo and an emotional tension that is present in much of Julia’s work.
