The festival Photo of Levallois on the outskirt of Paris presented her work last May, and even though she moved to France in 1990 and became a French citizen in 2005, Jan Groover (1943 - 2012) remains an outsider to the national photography scene.

In her native country America, however, Groover’s work has appeared in major museums, including a solo show at the MoMA in 1987. A selection of her photographs will be on display at the Paul Frèches gallery until May 18, 2013. The last gallery to feature her work in France was the Sonnabend gallery, in 1978.
Jan Groover’s career spanned forty years producing work that is so important and singular as to be almost unclassifiable. Perhaps one of the reasons for her neglect on the French arts scene is its Cartesian tendency to ignore everything that doesn’t fit neatly into boxes.

Like some other renowned photographers, Jan Groover, who was born in New Jersey, started out as a painter. She put her brushes down in the 1970's to “experiment with photography,” a medium in which she found more freedom.
