• 20.03—29.04 : Chris Marker “Films and Photographs” presented by the Artist and Peter Blum Gallery, New York
Koreans was a 1957 project. Chris Marker joined a small group of journalists who were allowed to have a free walking in North Korea. Uncensored photos taken during this journey depicted everyday life of the country, four years after the ruinous war. Amusingly, the result of those strolls was equally rejected on both sides of the 38th parallel. To the North, a book which never mentioned once the name of Kim Il-Sung simply didn’t exist. To the South, the raw fact that it had been allowed to be done in North Korea.
The Quelle Heure Est-Elle? series (2004-2008) is another story. Chris Marker took photos secretly, like a benevolent paparazzo. Inspired by a poem by Ezra Pound ‘The apparition of these faces in the crowd / Petals on a wet, black bough’, he photographed inside the Paris subway. He aimed at capturing these petals, giving people their best moments, often imperceptible in the stream of time, making them truer to their inner selves. At first he experienced with a wristwatch camera, hence the title for the series appeared. Then he used different contraptions but he kept the title, for his personal pleasure and also because the stolen moment of a woman’s face told something about Time itself.
The Silent Movie questions the linearity of narration and history. Chris Marker has been making moving images for more than five decades, always working at the cutting edge of technology and aesthetics, ideology and form. The five channel video installation presents a highly personal response to the one-hundredth anniversary of the invention of cinema.
