Pierre and Gilles met in 1976 and went on to form one of the most celebrated partnerships in contemporary photography. Their new book, Autobiographie en Photomatons, is a first-person story told by Gilles Blanchard through captioned images: a timid boy from Le Havre who moved to Paris, who made a group of friends and immediately fell in love with Pierre. We encounter everyone who mattered in Paris in the 1970s and 80s. The story ends with the disappearance of the old-style photo booths, Paris changed, and Pierre and Gilles first met with success. This picture autobiography is preceded by a long interview with Pierre and Gilles, and followed by a portrait gallery of the main characters from the film and life of this celebrated duo.
You can read the interview with Gilles Blanchard and Pierre Commoy, conducted by Paquita Paquin and Thomas Doustaly, on the French version of La Lettre.
