Milan 2012 - Lipanjepuntin
Starting with a simple photographic shot, Sergio Scabar creates unique pieces of art through the use of printing technique that is both mysterious and alchemic. His works are the result of an elaborate series of manual processes, only apparently traditional, in which the exposed negative is slowly transformed. His is an elaboration of reality that reveals a world made of shadings, suffused light and deep shadows, all part of the patient, slow and poetic research of the artist. Scabar’s particular imagery is exclusively created through photographic means, without any additional pictorial or digital modification. The artist aims to achieve a balance between light-sensitive materials, chemical products, paper and water to emphasise brightness, shadow and form. This direct contact with the materials is fundamental to Scabar, it incorporates the desire to work solely with traditional methods and the meticulousness of classical photography. Scabar tackles the real and visual issues concerning the reproducibility of photography, devising his own combination of poetry and craftsmanship. On the occasion of MIA Fair Scabar will present still-lifes, landscapes and several new works specially created for this event in which the two elements – still-life and landscape - are unified in the same image. Objects of daily use are shown as being caressed by light or enclosed by soft glow, while the backgrounds becoming dark evoke a dreamlike atmosphere, full of suspense. The further singularity of each photograph is emphasised by the different frame that Scabar personally creates for his images, whereby he takes the subject matter of the individual work into consideration. Sergio Scabar’s interest in photography began in 1964, and his first exhibition was held in 1970. Scabar has exhibited several times at LipanjePuntin artecontemporanea in Rome and Trieste. He has participated in numerous Italian and international art fairs, as well as exhibiting at the Photo Art Gallery La Batana in Croatia and at the Galerie Thessa Herold in Paris, France. In 2003 Scabar won the Premio Spilimbergo Fotografia and the Premio Michetti.
“…in my photographs my references should never be obvious or easily recognised, what occurred before the snapshot and what could happen after it should remain a mystery. I want the images I propose to strike as vague intuition, as a hint of the future, as a prolonged look…” Sergio Scabar
