Every year since 1955, the association Gens d’Images has awarded the prestigious Prix Niépce, which honors the work of a professional photographer who is less than fifty years old. The 8,000€ prize is sponsored by MK2. On Wednesday, June 6th, the jury, presided over by Esther Woerdehoff, met at the Bibliothèque nationale de France to award the 2012 Prix Niépce to Denis Darzacq presented by Hervé Le Goff.
Born in 1961, Denis Darzacq is a member of the Agence VU’.
He was awarded the World Press Photo in 2007 for his series La Chute (2006), which shows adolescents that seem suspended in the air. Darzacq revisited the theme two years later, this time depicting people floating in supermarkets, a comment on the alienating aspects of consumer societies. His latest series, Act (2011), portrays disabled youngster.
The prize was awarded to the winner by Marin Karmitz. In attendance was Bruno Racine, director of the Bibiothèque nationale de France, which supports the prize.
An exhibition of Darzacq’s work will be presented at the Galerie Esther Woerdehoff in October.
