The “Promenades photographiques” at the Vendôme auction house will begin this year with a sale on Friday, June 22 at 14h30. It will be presided over by the expert Yves de Maria and the auctioneers Philippe and Aymeric Rouillac. Last year’s sale* came principally from Charles Denis Labrousse’s collection and was centered around ten exceptional photographs by Gustave Le Gray. It broke many sales records for Gray and for 19th century photography. The 176 lots were sold for a total of 1,886,700€. The photograph “Bateaux quittant le port du Havre” alone sold for 740,000€.
This year’s sale, entitled "L'âge d'or de la photographie" (The Golden Age of Photography), draws from several collections. Among the remarkable items for sale are: an album by Blanquart-Évraid that brings together 24 works by the celebrated publishers (Lot 18); a rare portrait of Napoleon III on horseback taken by Gustave Le Gray (Lot 34), as well as several other works by Gray; a portrait of the famous mime Jean-Charles Deburau taken by Félix Tournachon (aka Nadar) and Adrien Tournachon (Lot 60); an elegant album of the works of Pierre-Ambroise Richebourg containing 186 vintage images (Lot 104); dye transfers by Pierre Tapponier (Lots 142 to 163); selections from the archives of Maurice Tabard that include contact sheets, books, geometric studies, manuscripts and letters (Lot 169); and, finally, a few modern photographs, including “Chez Suzy” (1931) by Brassaï (Lot 176).
