Founded in Munich on April 1, 1974, by Lothar Schirmer and Erik Mosel, the publishing house Schirmer/Mosel is today run by Lothar Schirmer with the help of a team of twelve people.

For the past 37 years, Schirmer/Mosel has published the greatest photographers of the 19th and 20th centuries, including: Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Anton Corbijn, Gisèle Freund, Nick Knight, Annie Leibovitz, Herbert List, Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, László Moholy-Nagy, Helmut Newton, Candida Höfer, Herb Ritts, Thomas Ruff, August Sander, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol and Weegee. This long list continues to expand and diversify.

Approximately 2,000 books have been published by Schirmer/Mosel since it first release, August Sander: Rheinlandschaften (“Rhine River Landscapes”) in 1975. More than 200 books are currently for sale in the photography section of their catalogue. Schirmer/Mosel also specializes in art books (painting, cinema) and literature.

We met Lothar Schirmer and his team on June 4, 2012, at the opening of the Thomas Struth exhibition St. Petersbourg held at the Schirmer/Mosel Showroom in Munich. Schirmer is both a publisher and gallerist, and has been a collector since his adolescence.

Today we offer a selection of the covers of books that have marked the publishing house’s history.
