Marc Riboud arrived in Algeria in 1960. His photographs are very rare due to the highly regulated and secure nature of the Evian Accords (May 1961 - March 1962). He was able to attend thanks to his relationship with certain members of the Algerian delegation. The photographer would also be present between May and July 1962, when independence seemed almost a certainty. He captured the euphoria of July 1, when more than 99% of the votes were cast. Independence was declared July 3 and celebrated on July 5.
