With a background in painting, the young Liu Yue (born in 1981 in Shanghai) approached photography with a sharp sense of space, objects and matter. Currently featured in two exhibitions in Shanghai, his work was also recognized during the last Photoquai festival in Paris.
The OFOTO Gallery is featuring is work for the third time with a series of 7 giant prints from ECHO (2011) focusing on the architectural aspects of common objects. The strange shapes in these prints evoke his series Mountain Blossom where he transformed flowery quilts into mountains. This time, the artist transforms white objects into imposing marble sculptures, at once rigid, delicate and fragile, offering an intuitive vision o space, matter, and form.
With the OFOTO Gallery, the Am Art Space is showing a different, lesser known aspect of Liu Yue’s work, his collaboration with Wang Yanling. For their first public exhibition, the two artists who reinvent themselves as a single artist named "Xiao MIng & Xiao Hong" are revealing an installation entitled “Anthem”, which reinvents the space by installing white paper in each corner of the room. While non-photographic, the installation correspond to the artist’s minimalist aspirations.
Lieu Yue confuses our visual sensibilities and leaves spectators perplexed. It is important to note how his work challenges our perspective. A questioning at once simple and efficient.
