Milan: Koudelka's "Gitans" and Saul Leiter's "New York Lights" at the Fondazione Forma
Nearly a year ago, Robert Delpire published Gypsies, and updated version of the 1968 work by photographer Josef Koudelka and graphic designer Milan Kopriva. The plan to publish the work in Prague in 1970 fell through when Koudelka left the country that same year, following the August invasion of Soviet troops.
In Paris, he revisited the layout with Robert Delpire and ended up with the book Gitans, la fin du voyage, which appeared in France in 1975. The work featured 60 photographs taken in Romani camps in Eastern Slovakia between 1962 and 1968.
Today, the book and exhibition at the Fondazione Forma in Milan, in collaboration with Magnum Photos, delivers an expanded version with 109 photographs taken between 1962 and 1971 throughout Czechoslovakia (including Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia), and also in Romania, Hungary, France and Spain.
The Forma Foundation is also presenting, through September 16, Saul Leiter's New York Lights, in collaboration with the Howard Greenberg gallery. The show brings together a selection of photographs taken in New York, including color and black-and-white prints, abstract and figurative paintings, and a little seen series of painted Polaroids.
