The renaissance of the Arab world, so long in gestation and so often aborted, now seems to be happening. It is the people who have asserted their power, having transcended fear, thus turning many ordinary citizens into heroes who will go down in the annals of history. No matter what the political outcome of the uprisings is, they shall always be heroes. Johann Rousselot is paying tribute to the courage and daring of these freedom fighters advocating democratic reform, activists for one day or for eternity, anonymous or wellknown. Here are revolutionary icons vividly expressing anger and hope.

Johann Rousselot
Johann Rousselot’s photography exists at a crossroads, trying to find a balance between his journalistic and artistic intent. It seeks to find sociological or historical depth in current subjects. Some have called it ‘The New Documentary’. Never neglect form for the sake of content, and vice-versa. Analyzing what has already been done or is being done on a subject, event or country that he plans to approach, Rousselot considers his work successful provided that its images are fresh while maintaining staying true to their subject. He has taken the struggle to break out of photographic clichés and made it his own.
