The first major retrospective of Pierre de Fenoÿl’s photography, entitled Le miroir traversé (Through the Looking Glass), will run through December 29, 2012, in Lyon. The retrospective comes 22 years after a tribute from the Fondation Nationale de la Photographie, of which Fenoÿl was the first director.
In his introduction to the exhibition, Jacques Damez explains that he put the show together after going through contact sheets, keeping only photographs already selected by the author. “Through his Leica—an anagram of Alice—we step through the mirror’s silvering into Wonderland. “
Even if he deliberately chose a camera whose viewing frame excludes any mirror shape, Pierre de Fenoÿl crossed to the other side of the looking glass the day he divested himself of all official, private, administrative and editorial responsibility. He was relieved the day he cut the last link and told me he had decided to become a photographer. He said it with such jubilation that there was no point in questioning this sudden decision. Indeed, at the time, everyone knew the the role he played in the world of photography, but not the photographer that was inside him.
