Photography is in trouble. The “experts” say so. To be serious, you have to give up a certain number of postures. First, to claim oneself an “expert” in photography. Many of them claim to be such even though they’re just gravediggers, having failed in their editorial and managerial responsibilities. In my case, because I’m asked to speak about photography in this press review, I know that my words are entirely subjective. Admittedly, my career as a photographer, and as a photo director of several publications, gives me a certain legitimacy. That I did not request , but will accept willingly. In both of these roles, I tried to be as transparent as possible. Transparency isn’t the same thing as non-existence, without preference or prejudice... About Photojournalism dying, documentary photography is trying to find itself, art photographers are scratching their heads, NGOs are replacing newspapers (see Claire Guillot’s October 6 article in Le Monde), and I’m happy this week to see images of revolt in several places, and the aftermath. And there’s always those photos of Marilyn.
