La Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz in Nogent-sur-Marne, France, and the Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire in Paris have joined forces to reflect on the work of Corinne Mercadier at a pivotal time in her career. Indeed, at the very moment when a first retrospective of her work, which toured France from 2006 to 2012 and resulted in a sizeable monograph published by Editions Filigranes, Mercadier’s visual language has seen a radical change, as she confronts the disappearance of techniques she had relied upon until now, and which gave her photographs a singular rendering.
In fact, Solo and Black Screen, two news series on view at the gallery as part of the Réel Ré-enchanté section of the Mois de la Photo, differ from her previous works (which used a complex double Polaroid shot) through a switch to digital film. Giving these new series, a deep modification as much in the way of taking pictures as in her esthetic .
In parallel to this exhibition, another one at La Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz focuses on Mercadier’s current work. Le Grain du temps examines how the construction a work, over time, forges new approaches to the same preoccupations: light and shadow, theatricality and dance, space and perspective—but also the incarnation of the instant in a form, paintings and flying sculptures, and the presence of the body, often undefined, almost an essence.
