The body is concrete reality, present in our being, which becomes the site of an endless questioning. As both subject and object, the body makes a display of its relationship with the world in its organic and symbolic dimensions. Art has done well to return us to this complexity: a body speaks, and is spoken. The artist’s language will make visible this reservoir of signs, and open for us, beyond the realm of the sensory, a new horizon. Contemporary photography has made the body one of its major themes.
The exhibition Esprits de Corps presents the work of John Coplans, Pierre Molinier, Catherine Rebois, Miroslav Tichy and Joel-Peter Witkin, demonstrating the specificity and the complexity of how photography treats the body, from the moment it reflects its ruptures, the fantasies and anxieties that characterize our current relationship to reality.
