“There’s no need to discuss Robert Doisneau’s life: looking at his photographs is enough to love him. But this man, who is the contemporary and equal of the uknowns he liked or disliked but whom he photographed all the same, is no stranger. As famous in England and America as in France, Doisneau is better appreciated abroad, whereas in France we tend to dismiss his photographs as anecdotic and picturesque.”

These prophetic words appeared in issue No. 34 (January/February 1976) of the magazine ZOOM, which featured a preface by Jacques Prévert and an interview with its editor-in-chief, André Pozner. The latter is the author of Robert Doisneau, comme un barbare, published this fall by Éditions Lux.

At a time when publishers are releasing massive tomes as expensive as they are unwieldy, as difficult to hold as they are to read, this small and unpretentious book by André Pozner is a relief.
