Jaimie Warren has been called the Cindy Sherman of the American Midwest, with a taste for modern technology. Although their subjects differ, the similarities in interpretation and style are unmistakable. In her photographs, Warren explores different female stereotypes found throughout art history, modern culture and the world of celebrities. Her images blend men and objects, animals and food, taking inspiration from historical paintings digitally altered by those she calls “bored-at-work Photoshoppers.” With a touch of humor, her self-portraits make light of different scenes. Warren and her friends take on the roles of characters like Zsa Zsa Gabor, Eazy-E, The Virgin Mary, Lana Del Rey and Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon. Like Cindy Sherman, the artist takes pride in the fact that she does her own costumes and makeup. This is a strange and colorful world whose criticism stings despite its familiarity.
